Tatyana Boutique’s ‘Secretary Pencil Dress’ in Black Review

Hello Dolls!

I’ve always been very fond of the styles created by Tatyana Boutique (formerly known as Bettie Page Clothing), even getting my mom one of her wiggle dresses for Christmas two years ago. Most of the Tatyana that I own are skirts or jumpers, but I’ve been eyeing a number of their dresses for years.

In 2014, Tatyana Boutique opened up it’s first and only Canadian store on Queen Street West in Toronto, Ontario. I was so excited when I learnt this, but hadn’t yet had an opportunity to peruse it. Luckily I finally had that chance this past Friday, and I’m so thrilled I got to! The staff were exceptionally helpful and welcoming, informing me of the sale that was going on (select pieces were on sale for either 25 or 40% off). I was impressed by their knowledge of the product, as well as how great they were at pulling pieces based on what I already expressed an interest in.

One of those such pieces was the black ‘Secretary’ pencil dress. I was immediately drawn to it, having seen similar designs on the Tatyana website in other colours. This dress just made me swoon – the collar is gorgeous and really gives it a 1940’s feel. I picked up a small, though I imagine the x-small would’ve fit my waist better. No worries though, since this cute number also comes with a black satin belt. I chose to pair it with a red bow belt that I also picked up that same day. This belt is one size fits all with several holes along it so you can adjust it to your desired length.

When I came out of the change room I felt like Dita Von Teese! I loved how simply elegant this dress was, highlighting that pinup ‘S’ shape. I love how this dress can be dressed up or down, and I know it will become one of my favourite wardrobe staples. It’s the perfect office dress; it holds elements of that Old Hollywood glamour, while still remaining work-appropriate in it’s length and modest neckline. I feel like the ultimate powerhouse in this dress. The material is reminiscent to that oh-so-forgiving stretch fabric that Stop Staring! is known for, while also containing a thickness to it, so you know it will last for years to come. As fall approaches here in Canada, I plan to pair this stunning wiggle with thick tights and a darling cardigan, though the possibilities are endless. I love that this dress will be able to be incorporated into my everyday wear from season to season, thus maintaining it’s status as one of the most versatile pieces I own to date.

I adore the four large buttons on the front, so I have the option to play up the nautical details of this hot little number, or even make a nod to it’s classic French beauty undertones. The dress also comes with an extra button in the event that one unwittingly comes loose in the future. There is a slit in the back so I’m able to walk around comfortable, not worrying about bending over or moving about. I was initially worried about the collar being too big on my frame, so I’m glad I had the opportunity to try it on in person. Thankfully it fits perfectly, and I’m beyond pleased with the result.

All in all, this secretary pencil dress by Tatyana Boutique is a real stunner, with it’s lovely quality stretch fabric, gorgeous collar, and nipped in waist. Tatyana carries this dress in sizes XS – 4XL, with all sizes currently available online. I’m really thrilled with the range of sizes offered, since I am a Body Confidence supporter, and I believe anyone should be able to wear what they want regardless of their shape. It makes me happy to know that Tatyana Boutique obviously believes in this too. You can find this sensational dress online here, or at the nearest Tatyana Boutique in your area.
