I am always in search for the perfect summer dress – something light that can catch a breeze to cool me down on those hot and humid summer days, but something that I can throw on and look instantly glamourous, and of course, something that you just look at and say, “Now that’s a summer dress!” And my word, is the Purple Floral Madison dress from the “Lady Vintage” range by Lady V London ever all that and more!
Lady V London is a vintage reproduction company located in the UK, though they also offer shipping worldwide. They carry a whole spectrum of dresses and styles from UK size 8 – 22, even offering a special collection called “Lady Voluptuous” which goes up to size 30/32 for women harbouring even more sultry curves. I really like this since as a body positivity advocate I celebrate women of all shapes and sizes – that’s one of the aspects that makes us so unique! Lady V London is not only based in London, but the clothing is actually made there and not outsourced to other countries, another aspect about the company that I appreciate.
The print of the Purple Floral Madison dress is sensational – with each colour rich in depth, especially the royal purple. The print also features light pink, coral, deep turquoise, pale green, and white. I love when I find pieces of clothing that host a multitude of colours, because it means I can mix and match my accessories with it to make it feel like a completely different outfit with each wear.
When I selected this dress I referenced the size chart on Lady V London’s website. The smallest size available was a UK size 8, which is generally my size. However, I knew from looking at the listed waist measurement – 27.5 inches – that it would probably fit me a bit big there since my waist is 25 inches. This is a common problem for me with clothing, since my bust and hips are a full size bigger than my waist. Sure enough, when the dress arrived and I tried it on, I knew it would have to be taken in. However, it was even bigger than I expected. My advice for those who order is to size down – the size 8 fits bigger than the other UK vintage reproduction clothing companies that I’ve ordered from, like Vivien of Holloway and Collectif Clothing.
So I sent the dress off to my trusted seamstress, and she altered it to fit my proportions perfectly (she also took it in at the shoulders since I have such a small frame, and a bit in the bust). But it was entirely worth it since it only cost me $35, and the dress only retails for 40 pounds, which still makes it a more inexpensive option than a lot of the other vintage reproduction companies where dresses can cost up to 80 pounds, or $150 USD. I would definitely order more dresses from this company because it ends up being less costly even with the alterations. Those whose measurements fall below a size 8, or really, a size 10 should consider this option as well!
As for the quality – I was floored. I honestly didn’t expect to receive such a well-crafted dress with sturdy fabric and stitching for such a reasonable price range. Although this particular style of dress seems to run rampant in the pinup community, what is different about Lady V London’s Madison dress is that the bust has the same fabric as the rest of the dress, improving the overall quality and aesthetic of the dress. The fabric is a nice cotton sateen, very comparable to the Pinup Girl Clothing “Birdie dress,” which you already know I’m a big fan of.
If you are a fan of the novelty prints offered by Lady V, but not sold on a particular style of dress, they have most of their patterns available in several different dress styles, so you can really curtail it to your personal taste. For example, this Purple Floral pattern is also available in the Isabella dress, Jasmine dress, and Marilyn dress. And of course this Madison dress is offered in a whole host of prints!
Lastly, Georgia of Lady V London was kind enough to offer a special coupon code for you darling readers to receive 10% off your entire purchase. Just enter “KIRSTIE10” at checkout. If you hurry now, Lady V is having a giant sale, which includes the Purple Floral Madison dress!
