I am absolutely thrilled to share this special blog post with you. As you know, my partner Tom has never worn vintage-inspired clothing – he has a much more laid-back style. But when Unique Vintage shared their brand-new Alfred Shaheen collection with me, Tom warmed to the idea of donning a Cabana Suit.
The Unique Vintage x Alfred Shaheen collection features reproductions of original Alfred Shaheen designs. If you’re unfamiliar with Shaheen’s legacy – his post-WWII apparel was critical in expanding Hawaii’s garment-manufacturing industry. He is often heralded as “the creator of the Hawaiian shirt,” and many of his authentic designs are still sought after in the vintage community. Unique Vintage partnered with Alfred Shaheen’s estate to recreate four of his most iconic designs – some of which are even available in children’s, men’s, and women’s sizes.
I was immediately drawn to the Blue Tapa Tapestry print – according to Unique Vintage’s website, “The stunning blue print is an officially licensed Alfred Shaheen reproduction of Tapa Tapestry, a gorgeous homage to island fab with repeated motifs of pineapple, hibiscus, and geometric patterns throughout.” This playful print made me fantasize about splashing around in a lake and relaxing in the summer sun.
True to Unique Vintage designs, the dresses and playsuits come in a range of sizes – XS-4X, so that women of all shapes can don these styles. I chose the playsuit in my usual size small and was pleased with the fit. I have thick legs so sometimes shorts can dig into them, but I did not have that problem with the Blue Tapa Tapestry Romper.
Tom opted for the Blue Tapa Tapestry Cabana Set Aloha Shirt and Shorts. Both of which come in men’s sizes S-XXL. Tom wears a size large and found the fit comfortable. The shirt fit him in the shoulders but left some room in the tummy for a relaxed fit and feel (which is perfect since the material has no stretch). The shorts also fit well with an elasticized waist-band and drawstring, perfect for ensuring the waves didn’t carry them away. His one critique is that the shorts are a bit short, barely covering his boxers. Though they are perfect for a beach day as swim trunks, he doesn’t think he would wear the shorts in everyday life. But he loves the print and has already worn the shirt multiple times since its arrival.
Both the Romper and Cabana Suit are made out of 100% cotton. Tom liked how his shirt featured wooden buttons and had a side pocket. He was also pleased to discover that the shorts also contained a tiny pocket on the right side, covered with a flap to protect his belongings.
I was glad to see that the Romper had polyester lining with a back zipper and hook and eye. But I was even more thrilled when I tucked my hands inside the side pockets!
The Blue Tapa Tapestry Romper retails for $118 USD and the both the Blue Tapa Tapestry Cabana Suit Shirt and Shorts retail for $78 USD a piece.
All in all Tom and I were so happy to don these matching designs together. Thank you to Tom’s sister Liana for snapping these gorgeous shots! And thank you to Unique Vintage for partnering with us for this extra special blog post.
‘Til next time my loves!
